Case Study
One of our most rewarding projects in 2025 was the transformation of outdoor learning spaces at a primary school in Walderslade, Chatham. The school had identified a need to develop their outdoor environment to support OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) principles — creating spaces where children could genuinely play, explore, and learn outdoors.
The school wanted to transform an underused area of their grounds into an engaging outdoor learning environment. Key requirements included a sand play area, natural materials for loose parts play, improved pathways, and spaces that could support different types of outdoor activity — messy, physical, creative, and nature-based.
Working closely with the school's OPAL coordinator, Roundwood Solutions designed and installed:
The transformation gave the school an outdoor environment that genuinely supports the OPAL approach to play. Children now have access to varied, engaging outdoor spaces that support physical development, creativity, and connection with nature.
The school's feedback was overwhelmingly positive — the new spaces were in constant use from day one, with children and staff both commenting on the difference it made to outdoor playtime and learning.
